Mentorship Program

Why is a mentor essential to success?

At Courageous Love, we believe that mentorship stands on the foundation of the principles of discipleship. Jesus showed us the importance of investing in others. He also called us to continue on the calling of making disciples. We believe that as foster parents, it is so important for a teen's success to have someone to invest in their future.

The statistics underscore that mentorship helps foster protective factors like self-esteem, resilience, and strong personal connections, while mitigating risks like dropping out of school or engaging in substance abuse. The support provided by a mentor gives teens a sense of belonging, guidance, and an example of success, significantly improving their chances of leading successful and fulfilling lives.

The National Mentoring Partnership estimates that 1 in 3 young people grow up without a mentor, indicating a gap in support for many teens who could benefit from the life-altering advantages of these relationships .

1. Academic Success and Educational Outcomes

  • Graduation Rates: Teens with mentors are 55% more likely to enroll in college compared to their peers who lack mentors .
  • School Attendance: Mentored youth are 52% less likely to skip a day of school .
  • Higher Education Aspirations: 76% of students who had a mentor said they aspired to enroll in post-secondary education, compared to 56% of those without a mentor .

2. Behavioral and Emotional Well-being

  • Reduced Risky Behavior: Adolescents with mentors are 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to start drinking alcohol .
  • Improved Social and Emotional Skills: Youth in mentoring programs exhibit increased emotional regulation, confidence, and overall well-being. A report showed that teens with mentors are 81% more likely to participate in extracurricular activities .
  • Mental Health: Teens who have a mentor are more likely to report positive self-esteem and mental health compared to their non-mentored peers. Mentored teens are more likely to report emotional support from adults, which is critical for resilience.

3. Career Development and Life Skills

  • Career Planning: 55% of mentored teens feel better equipped to plan for a career and make professional choices .
  • Employment Outcomes: Those with mentors are 78% more likely to volunteer regularly and 90% more likely to become mentors themselves later in life .

4. Long-term Impact on Life Success

  • Avoiding Legal Trouble: Mentored teens are 45% less likely to engage in behaviors that could lead to them being incarcerated .
  • Leadership Roles: Teens who were mentored are more likely to take on leadership roles in their community or work settings as adults, showing greater civic engagement and personal accountability.
